SAN ANTONIO -- New parents who are struggling financially often cannot afford the diapers they need for their infants. Now, some San Antonians are stepping in to fill that unmet need.

Infants can require up to 12 diaper changes daily. They are necessary items that don’t come cheap. Some local organizations are trying to help.

At a baby boutique at St. John’s Methodist Church on Bandera Road in San Antonio, all of the items were donated. Shoppers need special baby boutique bucks to buy the items, everything from teethers to strollers to those useful little bouncy chairs.

Methodist Healthcare Ministries offers new and gently used items to local families who complete parenting classes. Diapers are high on the list of desired items.

“You know, you can’t buy diapers with food stamps,” explained Norma Gonzales, RN, a nurse with Methodist Healthcare Ministries. “And diapers are very expensive and that takes up a big chunk of their income.”

The Hispanic Religious Partnership has established the first ever diaper bank. Nationwide gathered other useful baby items from a thousand employees to help the cause.

“We have brought over 5,000 baby items to fill this little pantry,” said Rebecca Marinas of Nationwide. “And we hope that other companies get behind Nationwide and do the same thing for this community.”

Having plenty of diapers can cut down on health problems associated with diaper rash and keep babies from being irritable. A crying, fussy child can more easily become the victim of child abuse in an already stressed out household.
